The Handy Finder is a phase detector. It consists of two antennas and a small switching circuit. The two antennas are alternately switched on and off at a rate of 1 KHz. When the observed signal is received on one antenna before the other, the two antennas are out of phase with the source signal. The result is the appearance of a 1 KHz tone on the incoming audio. This tone is incidental phase modulation produced by the switching action. When the incoming signal is received by both antennas at the same time, the tone disappears, which indicates that each antenna is an equal distance from the source. Therefore, you are pointing right at the signal source! The unit theoretically works on any frequency, but it's most effective frequency range is from 50 MHz to 500 MHz.
Kit comes with; board, components, antennas, coax and BNC connector.
Needed: 9 volt battery and PVC pipe handle.
Q: How much is shipping?
A: FREE! The purchase price includes First Class shipping in the U.S.A.
Q: Does the Handy Finder have just one tone null (in front) or two (both front and rear).
A: As it comes, with wide-band frequency coverage of 50 - 500 MHz, the Handy Finder
does produce both a front and a rear null. However, with the addition of a 1/4 wave coaxial
cable delay line to one of the two antennas the Handy Finders null reception area changes from bi-directional to uni-directional. Instructions for this modification are included.
Q: Can this unit be used for locating ELTs?
A: Yes! We have sold hundreds for that specific purpose with very good results.
Q: Can this unit be used for locating electrical noise?
A: We have sold many for that purpose. Results are mixed. About a 50% success rate depending on the actual cause of the noise.
Q: Can I see the schematic?
A: Yes! Click here to check it out.
Q: Can I see the parts list?
A: No!
